OU Vision Club

OU Vision is proud to host visits and seminars by local, national, and international experts in vision research. Our Vision Club Seminar Series occurs on Thursdays at 4:00 pm at the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute. Please use the drop-down menu above or to the left to access information about our Vision Club Seminars.

The OU Vision Club seminar series is sponsored by the OUHSC Department of Ophthalmology and the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute.

OU Vision Workshop

Our Annual OU Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Vision Workshop is held each Fall at the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute. Internationally known and respected experts in vision research are invited as Visiting Scholars to give the Robert Eugene Anderson Keynote Lecture and a professional development lecture for our trainees. All vision research graduate students and post-doctoral fellows can submit abstracts, which are due in August. Abstracts should conform to ARVO guidelines and be sent to the workshop organizers before the deadline. Travel awards will be given for innovation of research and best presentation by a fellow or graduate student. To be eligible for the travel awards, students and post-docs must submit their abstract by the deadline. We will also ask for submissions for the cover of the abstract book in August. Photos must be of no less than 600 dpi resolution, should be in color, and should be accompanied by a short description. The OU Vision Research Faculty will judge the photographs and the winner will receive a cash award. Examples of submitted images are scrolling on the OU Vision Home page.

Purpose

What vision scientists have accomplished in the last 40 or so years since the NEI was created is also nothing short of remarkable. For example, just one large clinical trial (the Diabetic Retinopathy Study) saves more dollars annually in unnecessary treatments and lost wages than twice the annual NEI budget! Vision research includes literally every scientific discipline, and is nothing if not interdisciplinary. We have all seen the benefits of working together as vision scientists on the local level in the successes of the P30 Core, P20 COBRE, and T32 training grant programs. The OU Vision Workshop has been developed to serve two purposes. The workshop is an interdisciplinary community building event that provides the opportunity for the entire OUHSC vision research community to come together and share their latest research activity. The workshop is also designed to give graduate and postgraduate scientists valuable experience presenting and defending their work before their peers and mentors.

OU Junior Vision Research Club (JVRC)

The OUHSC Junior Vision Research Club (JVRC) was developed to provide an opportunity for presenting and networking among our rising vision researchers. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the basic science and clinical departments, clinical residents and fellows, medical students, and laboratory personnel who focus on vision science are all welcome to join us. Our meetings occur on the first Monday of each month in the spring and summer semesters. These meetings include opportunities to hone presentation and moderating skills, become comfortable with asking and answering questions during presentations, and float out new ideas and network with fellow vision scientists, all in a relaxed and collegial atmosphere. Breakfast is provided and supported by the Dean McGee Eye Institute. A moderator and two presenters volunteer each month and the schedule can be found in our OU Vision Events calendar. In June, we invite one or more professional/career development speakers chosen by JVRC attendees. There is also a monetary JVRC Leadership Award given to a JVRC attendee during the OU Vision Workshop, held during the Fall semester.

For more information or to be added to the JVRC email list, please contact Faculty Organizers Drs. Martin-Paul Agbaga, Phillip Coburn, or Michelle Callegan.
