What vision scientists have accomplished in the last 40 or so years since the NEI was created is also nothing short of remarkable. For example, just one large clinical trial (the Diabetic Retinopathy Study) saves more dollars annually in unnecessary treatments and lost wages than twice the annual NEI budget! Vision research includes literally every scientific discipline, and is nothing if not interdisciplinary. We have all seen the benefits of working together as vision scientists on the local level in the successes of the Core and COBRE grant programs. The OU Vision Workshop has been developed to serve two purposes. The workshop is an interdisciplinary community building event that provides the opportunity for the entire OUHSC vision research community to come together and share their latest research activity. The workshop is also designed to give graduate and postgraduate scientists valuable experience presenting and defending their work before their peers and mentors.
